1/19 Neuschwanstein Castle
This "Sleeping Beauty" Castle is especially fantastical. It's said to have been the inspiration for Disneyland's very own castle, set atop a rugged cliff in Germany's Bavaria Alps. A theatrical set designer fashioned the structure for Ludwig II of Bavaria as his personal refuge. Construction began in 1868,though it was never truly completed.
Just seven weeks after "Mad King" Ludwig died in 1886, it was opened to the public for tours. It's since become one of the most popular of all the palaces and castles throughout Europe. Some 1.4 million visit each year to see the castle from which fairy tales are made of.
